The CLP has preselected four women to key seats ahead of August’s Territory election. Find out who they are.

Health professional Robyn Cahill will contest the winnable Port Darwin electorate for the Country Liberal Party at August’s Territory election.

Chief executive of the Darwin GP Super Clinic, Ms Cahill is one of four all female candidates the party announced at Central Council in Mataranka on Saturday.

Senior Larrakia elder Helen Secretary will contest Nightcliff, Darwin-born financial services specialist Oly Carlson will run in Wanguri and long-time Territorian Laurie Zio will contest Fannie Bay.

Wife of another high-profile medical professional Len Notaras, Ms Cahill was a candidate at the 2001 election. She said healthcare was symptomatic of a decline in the Territory

“When we arrived, business was booming, opportunities were endless and hard work was rewarded,” Ms Cahill said.

“The NT I came to has disappeared, the opportunities and choices continue to decline, businesses aren’t starting, they’re shutting, we can’t keep going this way.

“The healthcare system is in crisis, we can’t attract and retain the professionals we need, practices are closing and elective surgery wait times are ridiculous.”

Gwala Daraniki Association chairperson, mother of seven and senior Larrakia elder Helen Secretary said she wants to grow economic opportunities in Darwin.

“I put my hand up to fight for the people of Nightcliff because I am a proud local and I want to be part of the solution to making the Territory safe and the place of opportunity.”

“The CLP is about empowering Territorians to achieve their dreams and take responsibility for their future.”

Born and raised in Darwin, Ms Carlson’s father worked in the pearling industry and survived the Bombing of Darwin.

She said crime became personal when her mother was assaulted.

“As kids we had an incredible lifestyle and the choice to be whoever we wanted to be,” she said.

“My Mum, who worked so hard for us, now doesn’t feel safe to leave the house alone after being attacked by a gang of youths at Casuarina. Darwin is too important to us, I’m standing up to make a change.”

In Fannie Bay, policeman’s wife and mother of three, Laurie Zio, is up against Police Minister Brent Potter.

“I have put up my hand to take on Brent Potter because he has not been accountable to the people of Fannie Bay for his failure to support our police, hold criminals accountable and create a safe and strong environment for the business community.”

“The electorate of Fannie Bay is diverse and my background in education means I understand the importance of a quality education and safe schools for our kids.”

CLP leader Lia Finocchiaro welcomed the diversity of the new candidates.

“Today marks an important step in the campaign as we take the fight to Labor and show Territorians that we are ready to govern for a safe and strong Territory,” she said.

The CLP has four more electorates to announce.
