CCTV footage released as Northern Territory rapper Yung Milla fights aggravated assault charge after Darwin City brawl

‘Do you got a problem?’: CCTV footage previously thought not to exist shows Territory-born rappers J-Milla and Yung Milla in a drunken brawl on a night out in Darwin. Watch the video.

Territory rapper Yung Milla says he felt “scared” and “threatened” by his alleged victim in a late night drunken brawl, claiming self-defence as he challenges an aggravated assault charge laid against him in court.

Shock CCTV footage of the incident was uncovered in December, months after court proceedings began and contradicting some of the evidence given by witnesses to date.

Played at a Darwin Local Court hearing last Tuesday, the grainy footage shows Yung Milla, the stage name of 20-year-old Levi Colin Nichaloff, tussling with Kalen Wayne Rajak on Mitchell St in August 2021.

Yung Milla’s older brother and fellow hip hop artist J-Milla was also captured in the video, joining his younger brother in throwing punches while several bystanders watched on.

J-Milla is seen crossing the road along with his fiancee Poppy Radbone at the start of the video, contradicting testimony formerly heard in court that he had “one foot in a taxi” when he saw his brother in a fight.

Giving his version of events to the court last week, Yung Milla said he had been trying to get his friend to keep moving to Mayberry nightclub when a shirtless Mr Rajak started “standing over” him and “looked like he wanted to fight”.

He said Mr Rajak refused to step back when he was asked “do you got a problem?”.

“He had clenched fists looking over me, staring at me not saying a word when I’m trying to talk to him,” Yung Milla said.

“I felt threatened, I felt scared, he was a lot bigger than me.”

Yung Milla said he believed he pushed Mr Rajak away before they “both came at each other”.

Mr Rajak and another witness had previously told the court his shirt came off during the fight, however the CCTV showed him remove it before approaching Yung Milla.

Prosecutor Nicola Wright said “it doesn’t matter that his shirt was off” as the 23-year-old was not doing anything to warrant being shoved.

“He was just standing there. A reasonable person in those circumstances wouldn’t have pushed someone in that state … they would have just walked away,” she said.

Ms Wright suggested Yung Milla “misread the situation and overreacted” and that he had been the aggressor – something the rapper denied.

A property damage charge against Yung Milla was dropped after the CCTV was viewed.

J-Milla, aka Jacob Nichaloff, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault over the incident in September and was given a good behaviour bond and no conviction.

A verdict will be returned on Yung Milla’s aggravated assault charge at a later date.
