The Territory’s recreational fishers have reeled in a mighty big catch.

Almost $100,000 in grant funding has gone to local organisations through the 2025 Northern Territory Government Recreational Fishing Grants Scheme (NTRFGS).

Minister for Recreational Fishing Gerard Maley said the grants will deliver a range of projects that directly support recreational fishing opportunities and restore the Territory’s unique lifestyle.

“This grants program backs not-for-profit organisations passionate about growing recreational fishing and making it more accessible for all Territorians,” Mr Maley said.

“Fishing is an iconic part of the Territory lifestyle, boosting local tourism and contributing over $140 million to our economy each year.”

Round 1 of the 2025 NTRFGS focused on small grants of up to $15,000, with a total of just over $99,000 awarded to deliver nine community-driven projects.

Almost $100,000 in grant funding for fishers has been awarded.

Projects funded in this round include:

•The Palmerston Game Fishing Club’s popular Buddy Boats Day, which gives young Territorians with disabilities the chance to enjoy a day of fishing on the water.

•The Council on the Ageing’s Reel Connections initiative for senior Territorians

•The Katherine Game Fishing Club’s 2025 Kids Fishing Fun Day

“These projects strengthen our fishing culture and ensure that more people, including seniors and young Territorians with disabilities, get the chance to experience everything our world-class waterways have to offer,” Minister Maley said.

Round 2 of the 2025 program, offering grants of up to $75,000 for larger-scale projects, is due to open in August.
