Australia’s leading conference on agricultural development in the north is underway in Darwin.
The two-day biennial northern Australia Food Futures Conference focuses on developing new and creative approaches to agriculture in the northern region of Australia.
It is integral in driving expansion in the north and places northern agriculture on the national agenda.
Investors, politicians, industry and community stakeholders from around Australia and internationally are attending the conference, which has attracted 50 speakers from industry, research, government, and the private sector.
The Northern Territory produces more than 50 per cent of Australia’s mangoes and is home to a range of crops, including jackfruit, dragon fruit, garlic, dates, citrus, and passionfruit. Emerging industries include cotton, hemp, pongamia, and agave
The conference theme is ‘Innovative Agribusiness in northern Australia: Nurturing Natural Assets for Future Growth,’ and is presented by the NT Farmers Association in collaboration with AgForce Queensland (AgForce), Ord River District Co-operative (ORDCO), and Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen’s Association (KPCA).
The conference at the Darwin Convention Centre finishes on Wednesday but the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will host two ancillary events on 10 April, including a field day at the Coastal Plains Research Farm and a guided tour of the Berrimah Farm Science Precinct.
Other events include an NT Farmers tour of the Rapid Creek markets on 12 April, showcasing organic and tropical produce, and an “Instagram tour Territory Style” hosted by the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing northern Australia, highlighting local produce and industry.
