Darwin’s new mass vaccination hub will open at Marrara next week.

High vaccination rates and simple mitigation strategies needed to end lockdowns

DARWIN’S new mass vaccination hub will open at the Italian Club in Marrara next week, providing hundreds of shots in arms per week from Monday.

In announcing the opening on Tuesday, Health Minister Natasha Fyles said bookings were already open and encouraged as many people as possible to join the 90,000 Territorians who have already received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Ms Fyles said while there was still a steady supply of Pfizer jabs coming into the NT, she urged Territorians to be patient with any delays or alternatively, consider consulting their GP about whether the AstraZeneca shot was right for them.

“We have a regular supply (of Pfizer) from the Commonwealth and we will see more supply in July and we’re working with them around any additional supplies,” she said.

“This vaccination facility will allow for us to cater for any increases in supply that we see — there is more vaccine coming.”

NT Health’s Bhavini Patel said while anyone under 60 who wanted Pfizer would be able to get it at one of the vaccination hubs, those keen to have the AstraZeneca jab should discuss their options with their GP.

“The announcement today allows some flexibility for people who are keen to get the vaccine,” she said.

“Providing they’ve spoken with their GP to understand the potential risks and benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine, it is available for use for all ages above 16 in Australia.

“I would encourage younger Territorians to have a discussion with their general practitioner so they can understand the risks and benefits because each person needs to make the decision for themselves.”

The current vaccination facility at Royal Darwin Hospital will close to the public while continuing to serve front line health workers.
