POLICE are hoping CCTV footage of moments before a man was hit and killed on the Stuart Hwy earlier this month will assist with investigations.

They are calling for information from any drivers who witnessed the pedestrian prior to the crash as they investigate the circumstances around the incidents

“Police would like to speak in particular to the driver of a white SUV that avoided the pedestrian near the intersection of Lee Street and Stuart Highway," Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said.

"It is believed that this driver has information that can assist with inquiries.”

SATURDAY, JULY 2: A man has died after being struck by a car on the Stuart Hwy on Friday night.

The horrific incident, the latest in a spate of road tragedies on the Territory’s roads, unfolded at approximately 10pm according to police.

Major crash investigators and emergency services were on the scene at the intersection of Lee St and the Stuart Hwy, Winnellie at 11pm last night, and only left seven hours later at 6am.

The driver, also a man, stayed at the scene to help police with their inquiries, and Senior Sergeant Josh Cunningham said on Saturday morning drugs and alcohol were not considered a factor at this at stage.

“The cause of the accident is still being reviewed by Major Crash,” he said.

No further details on either the driver or the victim were available.

Snr Sgt Cunningham said the speed limit along the stretch of road was 80km/h.

A nearby worker, who wished to remain anonymous, told the NT News he arrived at work about 5:30am as the crash was been investigated.

“It looked like a maxi taxi with the front all caved in,” he said

“Police told me there were body parts all over the road.”

Police released a statement on Saturday morning saying they were still working to determine the identity of the victim.

“Detectives will investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. While it’s too early in the investigation to determine how and why the crash occurred, the driver fulfilled his lawful obligation to immediately stop and help the pedestrian,” Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.
