Fisho takes on hungry croc at Cahills Crossing

A Territory fisho has recounted how he refused to relinquish a prized barra to a hungry croc. SEE THE EPIC VIDEO.

Croc chases after fish at Cahills

AN EPIC, dogged battle between man and croc over the prized barramundi has been captured in a stellar video.

The video, filmed at the notorious Cahills Crossing, begins with a crocodile about 4m long gliding through the water, before setting its eyes on a barra fighting against a lure.

The chase begins with the croc picking up pace as the fish is reeled toward the crossing.

The croc closes in as onlookers gasp and scream.

The eager reptile comes within grasp of the fish as it bumps against the concrete of the crossing.

But the fisho at the end of the rod, Scott Roscarel, refused to let the barra go.

He angled the fish onto the crossing, taking a step forward before leaping back as the croc approaches the crossing.

Scott in his endeavour kicks his hat close to the croc, which his father goes to retrieve before jumping back.

In the background, a person is heard screaming “Let him have it”.

Scott drags the fish to safety as the croc crawls onto the crossing, throwing its head to the side to flash a toothy grin, staring at onlookers.

Scott, a born and bred Territorian, was fishing with his visiting father.

“He (father) hooked it (the barra) to begin with, then he saw the croc coming,” Scott said.

“He fought it for a bit then said to me ‘I’m not gonna beat this croc, you have to get this in for me’.

“I had to manhandle it. When the fish hit the edge of the crossing it jumped and the line for got caught on the front of the crossing.

“I ran to try de-tangle the line. I had that much adrenaline, I wasn’t thinking too much. I realised how close the croc was and I backed up.

“I snapped my rod in the process and got the fish in the nick of time.

“My Dad went and grabbed by hat and I said ‘What’re you doing mate? I’ve got 15 at home, I’ve only got one father’.”

Scott, who lives and breathes fishing, said the 103cm barra was a stellar catch after a few dismal days of angling.

“We lost a big fish the day before so I was a bit down in the dumps,” he said.

“When I saw how big the fish was and the old boy put the rod in my hands, there was a lot of pressure.

“When we got it in there were a few high-fives, a few hugs.

“After that we thought it doesn’t get any better than that, let’s go to Bark Hut, have a feed and a few beers to celebrate.”

Scott was fortunate enough to relive his experience from the video, taken by a tourist.

It wasn’t Scott’s first run-in with a croc and said he wasn’t deterred by the encounter with the beast.

“Catching a metery got me more keen to get out there,” he said.
