Fireworks are flying out the door in the Red Centre, the Top End and everywhere in between as dozens stock up for Territory Day.
Fireworks Warehouse at the Darwin Showgrounds was a particularly busy site on Territory Day with thousands passing through the big doors to get their hands on some fireworks.
Rob Balfour has been a part of the pyrotechnics brand for more than 30 years and said the unique event was a massive driver for tourism in the Top End.
The company was offering a buy one get one free deal on all of its items, and as a result crackers of all varieties were selling fast.
“Whatever people came in here to buy, they got the identical item for free, whether it was sparklers or the gods of war,” Mr Balfour said.
“It’s so unique to the Northern Territory that it basically brings a lot of interstate travellers into Darwin to enjoy the experience.
“We feel it’s a great event because we hire a lot of local people in the community to come and work for us, and there’s a lot of local industry that benefits from this event.”
Katherine O’Loghlin from Gladstone in Queensland was experiencing her first Territory Day as part of a visit to her cousin Nadine Benson.
“We came up to meet them and we just happened to be here while Territory Day was happening, so we thought ‘this is awesome, we want to take advantage of this’,” she said.
“We bought our first fireworks and it’s a real novelty.”
Ms Benson said for her as a Territorian it was something she took for granted, but having some family up made the occasion pretty special.
“I think it’s something special that we can do and I take it for granted being a local how special and privileged we are to get to do this,” she said.
“So having our family from interstate is great, we’re going to Mindil to watch the show and then will light some of our own.”
Lexxi Daly was another big fan of Territory Day looking forward to the chance to set off some big fireworks and experience the night with family.
William Stone in Alice Springs loaded up with a cyclone box – which had dozens of shots inside – as well as some jumping jacks and some lady beetles.
“I’ve been here for the last three years and I make sure I’m here every year, I love it,” he said.
“I love brightness – I’m a colorful person, and it’s like the whole team gets together and it’s good for the community out here.”
For Cushla Murphy and Adele Johnson, Territory Day was a tradition they’ve taken part in since they were kids.
“It’s just fun to let off some fireworks,” Ms Murphy said.
The duo wanted to see Territory Day become a public holiday.
“More holidays, more fun,” Ms Johnson said.

It’s the most explosive day of the year in which Territorians can legally purchase and set off fireworks.
Territory Day is here again and is set to be as big as ever before, if cracker sales are anything to go by.
Fusion Fireworks managing director Luke Caridi said all signs pointed to another successful year for his business.
“Everything is looking to be a successful year,” he said.
“The data is showing us it’s on track to meet the same sales as last year.”
Pre-orders have now closed but Mr Caridi said there was a lot of interest in the big assortment packs and bundles.
“We had a big deal called the Grounds for Divorce,” he said.
“It sold out pretty much in the first 48 hours.
“ And we’ve got our pro class container load, 15th anniversary edition those things have been the most popular by far assortments to sell out.”
In terms of what’s new on the market this year, Mr Caridi said it was a small but mighty product.
“We’ve got a novelty item this year called headaches and they’re a little item but they give an annoying a crackling sound that will last for two minutes almost,” he said.
As always, he urged Territorians to get in early to avoid missing out on bestsellers and to use common sense when it came to setting off crackers.
“We must remind people that it is privilege here in the NT to discharge fireworks —
please don’t abuse the privilege, clean up stay safe and enjoy your Territory Day,” he said.
Bushfires NT and St John Ambulance representatives fronted media on Friday to push out the same safety message and instruct the public on how to have a safe and memorable Territory Day.
“Ensure you have an adequate way of extinguishing any fires that may start, clear the area of any flammable material and ensure (you’re fireworks) are not going to set anything on fire,” Bushfires NT assistant director Nathaniel Staniford said.
