Empire Energy, Tamboran sign with CSIRO for GISERA

The two main Beetaloo gas companies have signed up with CSIRO to assist with research. Read what they hope to achieve.

‘There has not’ been a country ‘run’ entirely on renewable energy

Two of the key companies involved in the Beetaloo sub-basin gas project have joined CSIRO’s gas industry social and environmental alliance – also known as GISERA.

A collaboration between CSIRO, Commonwealth, state and territory governments and industry, GISERA was established to provide quality assured scientific research and information to communities living in gas development regions.

Empire Energy Group and Tamboran have joined with the national science agency to help inform Territory communities and government decision-makers about potential shale gas developments in the Beetaloo.

GISERA is working with the Commonwealth and NT governments undertaking a range of scientific studies in the Beetaloo.

These studies include baseline measurements of methane, groundwater and seismicity as well as research into stygofauna, biodiversity, groundwater dependent ecosystems including hot springs, transport impacts, well decommissioning, fugitive emissions, microbial degradation of gas industry chemicals and options for greenhouse gas mitigation and offsets.

CSIRO research director Dr Damian Barrett said the work will be important for understanding potential impacts of the onshore gas industry.

“In regions where natural gas development is occurring or being proposed it is vital that local communities, business, industry and policy makers are able to make development decisions based on CSIRO’s world-leading scientific analysis,” Dr Barret said.

“By working closely with industry, CSIRO can access on-ground engineering used in actual onshore gas activities by these companies in the Beetaloo sub-basin, resulting in accurate data on potential environmental and social impacts, and more certainty for communities and policymakers.”

Empire is an Australian oil and gas company that holds exploration tenements in the McArthur Basin and the Beetaloo Sub-basin and Tamboran operates the Beetaloo Joint Venture between Tamboran B2 (77.5 per cent) and Falcon Oil and Gas Australia Ltd (22.5 per cent).
