The man accused of murdering a Bangladeshi student during a violent Darwin home invasion will undergo a psychiatric examination, the Supreme Court has heard.
Brendan Kantilla is set to face a Supreme Court jury over the murder of 23-year-old international student ‘Sifat’ Md Isfaqur Rahman on May 3, 2023.
It is alleged Kantilla, 29, invaded the student’s Millner share house and attacked him in his room.
Following the alleged attack, Mr Rahman was found by his roommates in his own bed with critical head injuries.
After more than 30 hours on life support, Mr Rahman died from a traumatic brain injury.
He had only arrived in Darwin three months before his death.
In February, 2025, Mr Kantilla’s lawyer, Beth Wild, told the Supreme Court a preliminary report into her client’s mental health was under assessment.
On Tuesday morning, Mr Kantilla’s matter was brought back before the Supreme Court with an update.
Ms Wild said her client had successfully obtained a psychologist report which would be presented to the court, as well another key document.
“We are (also) in the process of getting a further psychiatric report,” she said.
“So the intention is both will work in tandem and that the professionals will be called to the trial.”
Mr Kantilla’s matter was adjourned to June 17, 2025, for mention and he will remain on remand.
