A woman’s body has been recovered from a bedroom of a unit complex in Sadadeen after a fire ripped through the building on Thursday night.

Watch Commander Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Dunne said that about 10.30pm police received reports of a structure fire at a unit complex in Peuce Place, Sadadeen.

He said initial reports stated the fire had fully engulfed the unit by the time police and fire units were able to attend the blaze.

“Northern Territory Fire Service along with police attended and the fire was extinguished,” Sen Sgt Dunne said.

“Tragically, the body of a deceased person was located inside that residence.”

Sen Sgt Dunne said a crime scene had been established at the unit complex and investigations were underway into the cause of the fire, and the identity of the deceased.

“At this stage investigations are ongoing to confirm who that person is that is deceased and the nature of the fire,” he said.

Sen Sgt Dunne appealed directly to Alice Springs residents and passers-by to help assist with the investigation.

He called for anybody who had been in vehicles or walking around Peuce Place in Sadadeen at about 9.30pm last night to contact officers.

Police and Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service members attended, and extinguished the fire.

The premises was unoccupied at the time of the blaze and no injuries were reported.

A crime scene was declared, and a fire investigator attended the site.

While inspecting the building for safety reasons, police identified what was believed to be cannabis inside.

A search warrant was executed, and the Dog Operations Unit was called to the scene, resulting in 1.8kg of cannabis being seized.

No arrests have been made and investigations remain ongoing.
