Behind every good coffee is a good story.
But the reason for crafting the perfect brew is what sets Little Amsterdam apart from the rest.
“We just wanted to make that minute that people are in here in the morning as special as possible,” co-owner Ben Carpenter said.
The specialty coffee shop is the latest venture for Mr Carpenter and his wife Lucy, who are the creators behind Davey Street Garage.
Opening up on Sandy Bay Rd recently, Little Amsterdam has a range of specialty coffee including roasted beans from Zest in Melbourne and unique roasted beans from Amsterdam.
“There’s a million people that make good coffee. You can talk about temperatures but its really about that engagement,” Mr Carpenter said.
“It’s getting someone to try coffee from Amsterdam which is nothing close to what they’ve tasted before, but telling them how it came to be. It makes drinking that coffee special.”
After crafting the perfect brew for nearly 25 years, Mr Carpenter said the pour over and his famous toasties have been hugely popular.
“The plan on Saturdays was to do coffee tastings here, there’s just so many people coming in and drinking pour overs,” he said.
“We’re also focusing on toasties, very unusual toasties.”
While the couple have visited Amsterdam many times, Mr Carpenter said they have many Dutch tourists visit the joint.
“They come straight through the front door, speaking Dutch, just smiling,” he said.
“Amsterdam is a beautiful place – a beautiful city and it’s vibrant and colourful and we wanted to create that here.”
Little Amsterdam is located at 3/40 Sandy Bay Rd, Battery Point.
