HOW much fun can you have with a man dressed in an orange onesie and a fluffy green monster?
If you’re a fan of US TV show Yo Gabba Gabba! the answer is: plenty.
While it’s not the way I usually spend my Saturday mornings, I was more than happy to shake my sillies out with DJ Lance Rock and his colourful Gabba crew as they kicked off their Australian tour at Riverside Theatre today.
Despite visiting Australia on three other occasions this is the first time the award-winning US show has visited WA with its spin-off live show, which features non-stop dancing, singing and fun capers.
Truth be told I was really there for the little person in my life. My date (aged two years, nine months) was one of many toddlers and pre-schoolers who gathered to see DJ Lance (looking resplendent in his skin tight orange suit) along with Brobee, Plex, Foofa, Muno and Toodee.
Some of the children, we’ll call them the future dance festival patrons, were bouncing from the very second the Gabba gang hit the stage. Others, like my partner-in-dance-crimes was a little slower to get into the swing of things. Then there were those who were happier just to sit back and enjoy the show.
The set was just shy of twenty songs spanning 90 minutes, including interval. Just perfect for short attention spans. Tunes included I Like To Dance, Hold Still, Party In My Tummy, All My Friends Are Different and Don’t Be Afraid.
Famed for its musical focus Yo Gabba Gabba! has, over the years, featured many a-list musical guests including Jack Black, The Killers and The Roots.
Chris Murphy looked stoked to be in that company as the Perth musical guest. Murphy took to the stage to perform Little Rocket Ship and the crowd were more than happy to clap and sing along with the local singer songwriter.
The Dancey Dance guest was Mix 94.5’s bubbly Jessie James who led everyone through a Saturday Night Fever inspired dance sequence.
Considering children and bubbles go together like parties and fairy bread, it came as no surprise that the bubbles unleashed for the song Bubbles were a big hit. Almost everyone was on their feet scrambling to pop as many as possible.
The show ended with The Goodbye Song. Thankfully there weren’t too many tears.
Although the women sitting next to me conspired to return for the afternoon session — minus the ankle-biters. Surely there would be wailing when their offspring found that out.
I guess they had more sillies they needed to shimmy out.
