US NBA star Tobias Harris has paid tribute to his friend Alex Aurrichio, who was tragically killed in a crash with a motor vehicle while cycling in Darwin’s rural area.
Writing on Instagram, Harris, the Philadelphia 76ers’ standout forward, posted: “I’ve honestly been in a shock all morning with the news of my friend Alexander Aurrichio passing.
“I think of all the memories, the basketball, the training the times you looked after a young 8th grader on the court with you, the rides home from practice telling me to keep my head on straight.”
Harris, a teammate of Australia’s all-star point guard Ben Simmons with the 76ers, donated $15,000 to a GoFundMe page set up this morning by former Waratah and AFLW player Abbey Holmes to help repatriate the body of her friend, Aurrichio, back to the US, where his family lives.
The page had remarkably already passed its goal of $50,000 just after midday.
In his Instagram post, Harris wrote: “As I sit here to write this post, I just ask ”why?” the answer unknown.”
“Every person comes into our lives for a reason, some have little to none effect, but others have a profound impact on who you shape out to be. Alex, you had that profound impact,” Harris posted.

“I hope you knew how much I respected you, how much a young kid in high school looked up to you.
“Your work ethic pushed me to want more; we both pushed each other.
“I would always see you from a distance through social media and would still know you were in a really good place, adventurous as they come, loving sports and excelling in all of them.
“I would always say you are living and enjoying your life. It was a blessing to see.
“I’m sad, shocked, and in disbelief.
“I think about all the people who are impacted because anyone who came into contact with you was forever touched in some way, shape, or form.
“You had that impact on so many people
“You were the leader of our championship team, the enforcer on the court, and one of the most fabulous teammates I’ve ever been around.

“You are missed brother, and you are LOVED! Until we meet again, brother.
“My condolences go out to the Aurrichio family during this time, and to all impacted.”
