UPDATE 9:15PM

TWO elderly people have died after being hit by a car while crossing the road in a tragic Christmas Eve crash in Townsville.

Acting Inspector Steve Batterham said the two people, aged in their 70s, were struck by a blue Mazda SUV on Ross River Rd, Mysterton, about 7.10pm.

It is understood the pair were flung a distance when struck.

“Two seniors were crossing the road and a vehicle travelling outbound on Ross River Rd has struck them,” he said.

“The male driver is being treated for shock and has been taken to hospital.”

Act Insp Batterham said the family of the deceased had been notified.

“All specialist units are here now conducting investigations, it’s only in its initial stages yet,” he said.

“It appears to be a tragic incident.”

Ross River Rd at the intersection with Bowen Rd is expected to be shut for a number of hours.

An eyewitness at the scene said she heard a noise and turned to see the two people “flying” through the air.

“I heard the bang and seen the couple in the air flying,” she said.

“When we saw it happened we just broke down and cried.”

The witness said she had only crossed the same road with her friends a minute before.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after and police have closed the road.

It is believed the driver of the vehicle stopped immediately after the crash.

A CAR has crashed into two pedestrians in Mysterton.

Paramedics are on scene at Ross River Rd Rd, at the intersection with Bowen Rd.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 7.10pm to reports a car had crashed into two pedestrians.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson confirmed paramedics are giving CPR to at least one person.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.
