TICKETS issued to speeding drivers in Cairns are on the rise, according to new speed cam data.
However, police put this slight increase down to additional cameras catching speedsters on Far Northern roads.
In 2017, the total number of drivers pinched by speed and red-light cams from Gordonvale to Port Douglas totalled 32,590.
In the same period in 2018, the numbers totalled 32,874.
Police attributed the increase to two new speed cams with red-light sensor technology that came into operation in 2018.
“The number of notices issued in the 2017/18 year is higher when compared to the 2016/17 year … (however,) the notices issued per operational hour has significantly decreased to 1.2 in the 2017/18 when compared to 1.6 in 2016-17 year,” a spokesman said.
“The reduction in notices per operational hour, despite the commencement of two new combined red-light (with speed) cameras, and an increase in operational hours, supports the effectiveness of the road safety camera program in deterring motorists from speeding.”
Research on speed and red-light cameras indicates they discourage drivers from speeding and assist in reducing the number and severity of crashes at places where cameras are installed, the police spokesman said.
