The Bureau of Meteorology has backflipped and changed its website after wild backlash from Aussies

The forecaster has not ruled out making further changes to the site, which was relaunched last week and has copped serious criticism.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has changed parts of its website after copping huge amounts of backlash from Australians.

The national weather authority performed a major upgrade to its highly used website shortly before wild weather struck Melbourne and Brisbane last week.

Many Australians complained they were unable to find weather warnings or information on the BoM website after the update.

The BoM has announced a change to its site, and said others are “in the pipeline” amid fierce criticism over the $4m redesign.

Changes launched on Friday meant the default rain radar will look as it did on the old site.

Users can now see the map display rain reflectivity (dBZ) as the standard setting, returning to a visual style “which users found intuitive and reliable for interpreting weather conditions”.

In this view, extreme rainfall and potential hail is displayed as very dark red or black.

BoM acting chief executive Peter Stone said they would continue to assess options for further updates and improvements at the same time as pushing on with their efforts to help the community become more familiar with the new website.

“We’ve listened to your feedback, and have restored the previous radar colour scheme,” he said.

“More changes are in the pipeline.”
