A SURGICAL operation to fix Marlee the golden retriever’s leg after she was allegedly shot at close range has been successful.
The one-year-old dog had slipped through the fence of her Yungaburra home on Thursday before being found, injured, by her owner Ms Chatfield later that night.
The beloved Tablelands family dog was taken to Balaclava Veterinary Surgery today after a friend of her owners raised more than $2000 on GoFundMe to cover her operation.
Owner Kaydee Chatfield said it was enormous relief for her and the family, having initially feared Marlee’s leg might have to have been amputated.
“To have that go so smoothly, this is the best news we could have had,” she said.
“We’re lucky that she’s so fit and healthy and a good weight, it probably helped a lot.”
Marlee will spend the rest of the week being monitored in recovery at Balaclava Vet.
Vet Jason Pollard said he expected her to make a full recovery.
“We managed to get a little bit of bullet fragments out, not all of it but we didn’t want to dig too much further,” he said.

“The rest of the fragments aren’t the main issue, we’ve got a heavy duty plate in her leg holding it together.
“She’s a sweet dog, it’s a shame somebody shot her, but she’s young and should come back to full health.”
Marlee’s shooting is currently under investigation by police.
