Shark sighting at Lorne

Beachgoers have been urged to remain vigilant after a shark was spotted at Lorne.

Footage posted to social media showed the creature cruising by the Lorne pier on Monday afternoon.

VicEmergency also reported an unconfirmed shark sighting in the area just after 5.30pm.

Surf Live Saving Victoria state agency commander Kane Treloar said the agency was “aware” of the video circulating online.

“Just before local lifesaving patrols ended at 6pm, lifesavers and lifeguards responded to reports of a suspected shark sighting in the area,” he said.

“Crews undertook surveillance via jet skis, however the shark sighting remained unconfirmed when the beach closed at 6pm.”

Mr Treloar said while sharks were a normal part of the marine environment, locals should remain alert.

“Always swim between the red and yellow flags and avoid dirty or discoloured waters,” he said.

“Never swim never river mouths or stormwater outlets after rain and avoid entering the water after dusk at night or before dawn.”

Anyone who spots a shark is urged to report it by calling triple triple-0 or notifying local lifesavers.
