KING tides have peaked across Cairns, with flooding in some areas.
Water has gone over the road at Tingira St, Redden St and Trawler Base Rd at Portsmith.
Far North District Crime Prevention Senior Constable Russ Parker said motorists driving through the area should take it slow and steady.
“It’s fairly shallow, but if you’re going to go through it, go slowly to keep water from spraying up and into people’s businesses,” he said.
“It is saltwater, so if you’re going to race through it, you risk getting that all over your vehicle and it is corrosive, so steady as she goes.”
Residents are advised to avoid parking in low-tidal areas on days where there’s a king tide, and to take alternate routes where possible.
King tides are forecast to be the highest for the week today, peaking at 3.52 metres as of 9.15am.
Cairns king tides are expected to peak again at 9.54am tomorrow and 10.33am on Thursday.
Other streets where minor flooding is expected this week includes:
- Cairns Esplanade and Pier Point Road
- Marlin Parade, Cairns
- Cairns Esplanade and Lily Street
- Fearnley Street, Portsmith
- Aumuller Street, Portsmith
- Liberty Street, Portsmith
