SAFETY officials are investigating a train crash at Weipa that injured a train driver and wrecked a locomotive.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is probing a collision between an empty ore train and rail wagons at Andoom, about 20km south of Weipa, which occurred on September 22.
The train crashed into the rail wagons that were being loaded with bauxite at Rio Tinto’s Andoom mine site, about 9.30am.

According to the bureau, the train’s driver sustained minor injuries and attended Weipa hospital as a precaution.
The train’s locomotive and four ore wagons were extensively damaged.
As part of its investigation, the ATSB will be reviewing locomotive data logger information, and interviewing the train driver and other rail operations personnel.
A final report is not expected to be released until late next year.
Rio Tinto has been approached for comment.
