COME to the Gold Coast Will and Kate - that’s the message from the Glitter Strip’s Mayor who wants to give the royals a taste of Australia’s tourism capital.
It was revealed earlier today that Prince William and his wife, Kate are planning to visit Australia this year to tour communities devastated by bushfires.
Early talks have begun between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Kensington House with a formal invitation yet to be issued.
No locations or dates have been settled.
But Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate, a keen monarchist, says he’s prepared to roll out the red carpet to bring the royals to town.
“I will be writing to the Governor-general to extend an invitation for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to come to the Gold Coast,” he said.
“While the Gold Coast was mostly lucky to escape the bushfires that ravaged Australia this summer, I would love to show them the Gold Coast two years on from the Commonwealth Games and show the legacy that it has generated for our city.
“We are also home to some of the most beautiful nature experiences – our beaches our hinterland and we are only an hour’s flight from the Great Barrier Reef.”
In 2018 Cr Tate played host to William’s father, Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Sussex during the Commonwealth Games and met the Queen during a visit to London in 2017.
It’s expected Prime Minister Scott Morrison will formally write to the Palace with suggested dates and a proposed program later this week.
It would be the couple’s first visit to the country since 2014.
