A REPEAT sex offender had just been let out of jail for abusing seven children when he began messaging a 14-year-old girl telling her he wanted to "have sex".

Convicted Townsville sex offender Harley Jaymes Wilkes, 25, was being supervised under the dangerous prisoner act when he was caught messaging the teen on Instagram and with child pornography images on his phone.

Prosecutor Brendan White told the court Wilkes the offending began the same month he had been let out of jail after serving four and a half years for abusing young children and threatening to kill two of them.

Mr White said between April and September last year, Wilkes was sending "overtly sexual" messages to a 14-year-old Canadian girl.

"He told her he wanted to have sex with her, that he was turned on at the thought of her playing with herself…," Mr White said.

"He told her he enjoyed the innocence and vulnerability of kids and thought her being a virgin was sexy."

Police also found 217 explicit photos on Wilkes's phone.

"The most serious I saw was a baby holding an erect penis and a 10 to 12-year-old girl being raped…," Mr White said.

Defence barrister Nathan Boyd said since Wilkes was 19, he had spent most of his life in jail.

Mr Boyd told the court of Wilke's abusive childhood and that he had "gained some insight into the state of his mental condition".

"In his own words he's come to the realisation that he has a distortion of reality that has come about because of his upbringing," Mr Boyd said.

"Simply put, it's hard to imagine a more adverse or horrible upbringing that he's had to endure. Every person of significance in his life has abused that trust in the most egregious of fashions."

Judge Ray Rinaudo sentenced Wilkes to four years' jail, stressing that child exploitation material was not a "victimless crime".

"Children are involved and it's frightening to imagine what those children are going through," Judge Rinaudo said.

Wilkes will be eligible for parole on January 6, 2020. - NewsRegional
