A FREE service aimed at helping improve hygiene standards and restoring dignity to people in Cairns doing it tough has hit the streets.
Orange Sky Australia has extended its services to Cairns, launching a free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness.
The new custom-built vehicle is fitted with three 15kg washing machines and three 10kg dryers, along with six orange chairs for members of the community, and visits various suburbs across the city each day of the week.
Orange Sky Remote and Indigenous Services Program Manager, Judith Meiklejohn said the first few days of operation in Cairns had been positive.
“There’s certainly been a level of need that we’ve identified in particular areas,” she said.
“I thought it would take a little but of time for people to build trust, but they’re super keen to get in and get on board.
“Already there’s some great conversations happening and great connections and everyone’s getting all their bedding and clothing cleaned.
“It’s a very exciting start to Cairns.”
Orange Sky is calling for anyone in Cairns interested in giving back to their community to register as a volunteer.
“We’ve got seven potential shifts that people can join and we’re just really calling out for volunteers to join us on any shift, but particularly Monday to Friday,” Ms Meiklejohn said.
“People who are over 18 and able to have a good yarn, and know how to do a load of washing.”
