Mercedes Corby lashes out at media ahead of Schapelle’s deportation to Australia

SCHAPELLE Corby’s sister Mercedes has lashed out at the media while a Bali police chief patrolled the convicted drug smuggler’s home on the eve of her deportation to Australia.

Kuta Police chief Wayan Sumara today personally patrolled the laneway directly in front of Corby’s home before she underwent a final mandatory medical check.

As he spoke with media outside the house, Mercedes Corby was heard shouting from inside: “Get away from our house ... stop perving ... and get the cameras out please.”

Corby was declared “healthy” and “well” today after a jail doctor and nurse and parole officers visited at her Kuta home to conduct a medical check ahead of tomorrow’s deportation.

As he left Dr Hartawan told the media that Corby was healthy and well, repeating the words several times. It is understood that Corby initially refused the check but that Dr Hartawan came to the house anyway and the check was conducted.

Dr Hartawan said that Corby’s expression was “flat” and made no response when a parole officer asked if she was happy about going home tomorrow.

“Her expression was flat. When the parole officer said, you must be happy about going home tomorrow, Corby didn’t give any response. Only Mercedes was smiling, Corby kept a flat expression,” Dr Hartawan said..

“She is fine. healthy. she is well,” he said. “She can run, walk, eat, so, no problem. We only see her physical condition, monitoring her,” he said.

Dr Hartawan said that Corby had refused a full medical check, telling them she was fine and healthy, questioning why a medical was needed.

“She refused a medical test. I only see her condition. she looks healthy. she looks fine,” Dr Hartawan said. “She said to us, You can see that I am healthy. No problem at all, no need for a medical test. What for? She looked fine, still the same as I saw her the last time at the jail.”

Dr Hartawan said he could see from her physical condition that she was healthy so there was no need for a full medical check-up.

He last saw Corby at Kerobokan prison in February 2014 when she underwent a medical test before being granted parole.

He said when they arrived Corby shook the doctor’s hand and kissed the cheek of his nurse, Rusmawati.

She was not covering her face for the 30-minute meeting.

“She also said that before, she can freely go to the beach and out but now, at least for the last three weeks, she could not come out from the house,” Dr Hartawan said.

“Too many media. I do not feel comfortable,” Corby said to Dr Hartawan.

He said that when he asked Corby where she would fly tomorrow, she said: “Can go to Perth, can go to Brisbane, or wherever

It comes on the eve of Schapelle Corby’s sentence ending and her deportation to Australia.

Mr Sumara told the media gathered outside the home that he was checking local security.

“I don’t see the security threat for her but this is the responsibility as police, whether there is a threat or not the police must have responsible (sic) for security,” Mr Sumara said.

He said Kuta was a tourist precinct and he needed to ensure the area was secure, hence stepping up patrols.

Mr Sumara said that given what was expected tomorrow in the small laneway, when Corby leaves for the parole board and then her flight home, he wanted to ensure it was “safe and secure” for everyone.

“There must be security, must be an escort,” he said of tomorrow’s plans and the expected chaos which has always surrounded the Schapelle Corby case.

“We from Kuta police are only securing the area (in Kuta). There will be Denpasar police who will be responsible for the security of the process. We just focus on the area, so there is no vulnerability, insecurity or any security problem in the area” Mr Sumara said.

Corby was required to go to the prosecutor’s office one last time but a stand-off with officials continues and it appears unlikely she will report there today.

Plans are currently being drawn up for tomorrow when Corby will report to her parole officers for one last time before being taken to the airport to be deported to Brisbane.
