Armed Robbery Palm Cove

A MAN has been remanded in custody after he allegedly car jacked an elderly man with a knife in the car park of a Palm Cove hotel and drove it dangerously almost 50km south.

Jay Richard Sulway, 28, was charged with multiple offences including armed robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed and disqualified driving and obstruct police.

He was arrested in a field beside the Bruce Highway near Gordonvale after allegedly driving for more than six hours.

Police have alleged he drove the car dangerously on multiple occasions including running a red light, driving on the wrong side of the road and driving on the footpath.

They had attempted to intercept the vehicle several times during the morning, but were finally able to spike the car’s tyres on the highway at Wright’s Creek about 12.30pm.

Duty solicitor Dave Jenkins told the Cairns Magistrates Court he would not be making a bail application for Mr Sulway and he was remanded in custody.

The court heard he was also facing several drug offences from a previous date and was already legally represented for those matters.

The case was adjourned until February 22.

Far North police Det Acting Insp Kevin Goan said the car owner, a man in his 70s, had been left shaken.

Video footage of the alleged incident, released by police, showed the man originally had his two dogs in the car which were allegedly removed from the vehicle before it was taken.

Det Acting Insp Goan said police seized a large screwdriver following the man’s arrest.

He said the alleged incident was “unusual”, given it happened about 7.30am in the morning in the popular tourist suburb.

“It is a safe community for anyone to come and visit and conduct business,” he said.

“It’s something we would see as relatively alarming that someone that is visiting our region is (allegedly) set upon while they’re undertaking the very simple act of loading luggage into the vehicle to continue on with their journey.”

The older man was not physically harmed.
