Lorne Falls Festival axed amid coronavirus pandemic and border restrictions

Organisers have made a call on whether they will forge ahead with the Falls Festival in Lorne at the end of the year.

Falls Festival cancellation

This year’s Lorne Falls Festival has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and border restrictions, organisers announced on Wednesday.

Despite earlier plans to forge ahead with an All-Australian line-up, organisers confirmed that its planned New Year’s events in Lorne, Byron Bay, and Fremantle will no longer be possible.

In an email to festival goers on Wednesday morning, organisers said the cancellation was a “raincheck,” and promised to “get Falls Festival back in the calendar.”

In comes after organisers had announced in May its plan for an all-Australian line-up of artists for the festival’s New Year’s Eve 2020/2021 event, which is often headlined by international acts.

The 2020 cancellation comes after Falls’ 2019 Lorne festival in December was forced to cancel at the very last minute due to serious fire risk.

More than 9000 festival goers who has already arrived at the site, were told to back up their tents and evacuate – one day into the four-day festival.

The cancellation of Falls leaves nearby popular music festival, Meredith, in limbo, which is also held annually in December.

Meredith organisers told the Geelong Advertiser that a final decision on the festival is set to be made, either way, in the coming weeks.

Falls adds to a list of music festivals canned across the region due to COVID-19, including Torquay’s The Drop and Queenscliff Music Festival.
