Joe Hildebrand: Awe-inspiring stuff as Greens seek to share power with the PM they attacked

Adam Bandt publicly asking the Labor Party to share power with the Greens is making all of the right’s Christmas dreams – Peter Dutton as next PM – come true, writes Joe Hildebrand.

Adam Bandt claims Labor ‘slowly moving’ towards Greens’ position on the Middle East

For a bunch of godless atheists, the Greens really are the Christmas gift that keeps on giving.

And so let us pause and give thanks for their latest offering: A public plea by leader Adam Bandt for the Labor Party to share power with him.

This is truly awe-inspiring stuff. After a woeful Queensland election loss, a dismal performance in the NSW local government Super Saturday and a drop in the national polls, the Greens have decided this is their time to strike.

First Bandt self-congratulated the Greens for dragging Labor to their position on the Israel/Palestine conflict and now he’s asking the ALP to enter into a coalition with the minor party miserablists.

It’s a classic fake with the left, hook with the far-left combination.

And indeed fake is the operative word here because the Greens’ latest shamelessly shambolic tactic is built on a lie.

A desperate falsehood of such embarrassing transparency rarely seen since 17th century witch trials.

As all snake-oil salesmen know, the best way to deliver a miracle cure is to diagnose a fake disease.

Thus Bandt’s first step was to pretend that the Albanese government was following the Greens on Palestine. This is utter horseshit.

I know as much as anyone how frustrated Jewish Australians and a furious Netanyahu government are with Labor’s response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack and the conflict that has followed – both here in Australia and with far more deadly effect in the warzones of the Middle East.

But whatever criticism they have been copping from the Jewish community – much of it more than justified – it shrinks into almost nothing compared to the barrage of abuse, vandalism and violence that far-left activists, often Greens supporters, have directed at the government generally and the PM personally.

Far from winning him over to their side, they have hardened Albanese against them.

It is no exaggeration to say he holds them in contempt.

The Greens and their supporters attack him constantly on social media, heckle him at public events and spent months barricading his electorate office.

And, of course, it is the Greens who try to eject him from parliament at every election, running ferociously against him in his seat of Grayndler.

But hey! We can all still be friends right?

Wrong. When the never-should-have-been-a Labor Senator Fatima Payman voted with the Greens on another pointlessly deranged motion purporting to support Palestine, Albo made sure she was shown the door.

When you’re looking down the barrel of a hung parliament and still prepared to sack a senator for siding with verdant Marxists – that’s a statement as strong as it gets.

But for all their talk about “listening” to people, the Greens don’t seem to do a lot of it themselves.

And so let me make it abundantly clear to Bandt and his coterie of courtiers: He’s just not that into you.

I know this can be hard to take – rejection always is – but there are plenty more fish in the sea.

One particularly big fish is Peter Dutton, a man I personally like very much but whom I suspect a fairly large cohort of Greens voters don’t share the same opinion of.

Well, I hate to break it to you guys – and girls and thems – your leader is trying to make Peter Dutton the PM.

Adam Bandt might be many things, such as a Melbourne University Marxist, but he is not stupid. Even a one-eyed ideologue can see that the Greens’ vote has dived with its vicious and virulent anti-Israel stance. And so, like a drowning man, he tries to drag down his would-be rescuer by tarring him with the same toxic brush.

The painfully obvious strategy is to damage Labor so much, to drag it so deep, that in the event of a hung parliament its seats are so low it would be forced to rely not just on the genuine independents, nor just on the smugly self-righteous Teals, but to leave it so broken and despondent it would be forced to do a deal with the party of last resort.

Any sane progressive can instantly see that this would result in the Labor government’s immediate immolation, just as it did in 2010, and the horrorshow that followed.

But the Greens don’t care about that because they want to destroy Labor and send it to oblivion so they can be the dominant opposition.

It’s utterly deranged and yet utterly true – in fact Bandt has happily declared this vision to the world for years. And the result of all this would be a Dutton government next year and an endless parade of right-wing populist governments in all the years ahead.

Despite my long-suffering love of the Labor Party, I have many beloved friends and readers on the right who would love to see this.

So, on behalf of them, I must thank the Greens for this greatest of gifts. You are making all their Christmas dreams come true.
