A FAMILY-friendly Territory Day encouraged locals to appreciate the typical Dry season weather by Darwin’s scenic shorelines.
Enjoying the Darwin Waterfront with his partner and three children, Cassius Ronberg said it was great to celebrate Territory Day during the school break.

“We’re just enjoying the beach, the water and the sun, I suppose,” he said.
“We’re up from Alice — on Territory Day, we usually have a family barbecue followed by the fireworks.”
He said his family was disappointed the fireworks had been banned but was looking forward to next year’s celebration. “That’s what makes Territory Day, I suppose, or sets us apart from everyone else in the fact we get to enjoy fireworks this time of year,” he said.

“We’d go down to a community park and set them off with everyone else and join in the fun.”
Not everyone agreed. Lynn Hazelton said it was a peaceful change without crackers.
“The Territory might get really creative and do something different,” she said.
“It might be an opportunity; every cloud has a silver lining.”
She enjoyed the day with one of the NT’s best views at the Darwin Sailing Club.
“There’s nowhere more beautiful in the world— the tide’s in, it’s stunning, we’ve just watched someone load up their boat. It’s pretty good.”
Meanwhile, Abi Wheeler said she’d be keeping it low-key, understanding why fireworks had been banned for the year. “We’re doing nothing, just soaking up the sun,” she said.

“We usually have quite a bit of fireworks, blow a bit of money, but this year obviously not.
“I think it’s safer for everyone to stay inside but it is sad, given it’s the Territory’s Day to celebrate.”
