The 2024 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing period begins this week.
Students across the country will take their NAPLAN tests between Wednesday 13 March and Monday 25 March.
What is NAPLAN?
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
It is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not students are developing key literacy and numeracy skills.
The NAPLAN results allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of their school community, and against national standards.
What does NAPLAN assess?
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum.
Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics.
NAPLAN does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.
How do I prepare my child for NAPLAN?
Students are not expected to study for NAPLAN.
You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is a part of their school program and reminding them to simply do their best.
Parents/carers can provide some explanation of the NAPLAN assessment and the format of the tests, however teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of services by coaching providers.
There are NAPLAN demonstration tests, which show the types of questions and the test functionalities, available on the NAPLAN public demonstration site.
How did my school perform in the 2023 NAPLAN?
Australia’s top 100 primary schools and top 100 secondary schools, based on average 2023 NAPLAN scores, were revealed earlier this year and it makes for interesting reading.
NSW is officially the smartest state in the country when it comes to the nation’s best performing schools, with Victoria second, and three states and territories not even making the cut.
