COMMONWEALTH Games bosses have been forced to reveal an embarrassing error, with the event’s most prized tickets issued with the wrong date.
Tickets for the opening ceremony have been sent to thousands of people with the wrong day printed on them.
The ticket states the ceremony is on Thursday April 4, but April 4 is actually a Wednesday.
Games CEO Mark Peters said the 14,000 opening ceremony tickets sent out so far had the right date — April 4 — but the wrong day of Thursday when it is in fact Wednesday.
The opening ceremony had capacity for about 35,000 and checks were still being made with Ticketek whether other tickets had been printed with the same mistake.
The blunder had “emanated” from Ticketek’s end and they had confirmed it about 4pm today after GOLDOC staff noticed social media chat about the problem.
A decision had already been made on advice from Ticketek not to have the tickets with the wrong day on them reprinted and he wanted to assure ticketholders they were “valid”.
He said he was not concerned ticketholders would get the day wrong and miss the event: “I am sure when you see all the publicity people will know when the opening ceremony is. We have no doubt when we get to Games time people will know this is when the opening ceremony is, on the 4th.”
Adam Francey said he did a double take when he received his much-anticipated opening ceremony tickets in the mail this morning.
The Brisbane man discovered the day was wrong when he looked closely.
“I understand it is a huge event, but the opening ceremony day is pretty important,” he said.
“At first I didn’t even notice it, I was too excited. But then my wife pointed it out.
“It’s the only tickets my wife Tanya and I purchased and we both took the day off work.
“We are hoping the organisers quickly reissue new tickets.”
The couple, who bought the tickets last year, said they had been looking forward to the event.
“At the moment we are just going to wait and see what they say. If we don’t hear anything soon we are going to have to contact them.”
