THE top performing NAPLAN schools in Cairns and Far North Queensland have been revealed following the 2019 results release.

Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the controversial nationwide standardised test in May.

The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.

Across the Far North Queensland region found Year 3 and Year 5 students at Yorkeys Knob State School got an average NAPLAN score of 5083 – the area’s top performing primary school.

The second best performing primary schools was Trinity Anglican School where the average result was 4948 for Year 3 and Year 5 students.

The third best performing primary school was Our Lady Help of Christians School (Earlville) where the schoolwide average score was 4869.

St Monica’s College was Far North Queensland’s top performing high school.

There Year 7 and Year 9 students received an average NAPLAN score of 5821.

The second best performing high school was Trinity Anglican School where the average score was 5752, while the third best performing school was St Andrew’s Catholic College where the average score was 5748.

The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Queensland Government calling for a national review into the test.

But advocates maintain the test is an important way to view student and school progress at one moment in time and schools use the results to improve teaching.

Far North Queensland’s top 10 performing primary schools:

Yorkeys Knob State School: 5083 points

Trinity Anglican School: 4948 points

Our Lady Help of Christians School (Earlville): 4869 points

Goondi State School: 4860 points

Freshwater State School: 4835 points

Mourilyan State School: 4833 points

White Rock State School: 4802 points

Mother of Good Counsel School (Cairns North): 4797 points

Peace Lutheran College: 4769 points

Good Counsel Primary School (Innisfail): 4768 points

Far North Queensland’s top 10 performing high schools:

St Monica’s College: 5821 points

Trinity Anglican School: 5752 points

St Andrew’s Catholic College: 5748 points

St Augustine’s College: 5719 points

St Stephen’s Catholic College, Mareeba: 5666 points

Cairns State High School: 5662 points
