Luck of the draw: where Queensland’s candidates will be placed on your ballot paper

Polling day is just around the corner. Here’s the full list of every candidate running in Queensland seats for the federal election.

The luck of the ballot draw was against the Queensland Australian Labor Party this election, with the ALP to appear last on the list of senate candidates and drawing the bottom spot on more House of Representative ballots than any other party.

For the senate paper, the Liberal National Party was also among the last to be drawn and will appear nineteenth out of 25 groups nominated, while the Queensland Greens will appear 10th down the list.

Greens deputy leader Senator Larissa Waters said she was pleased with her party’s position after watching the public ballot draw on Adelaide St.

“I think it won’t make terribly much difference, the position on the ballot paper, but what people want to know is that parties are listening to their concerns and will act on the things that really matter and they’re hearing that from the Greens,” Ms Waters said.

“We’re putting some great big ideas out there that will solve the cost of living issues, fix the climate crisis and address the housing crisis.

“They’re not hearing that from Labor and Liberal who are in a competition to say as little as possible, it’s very uninspiring and people are desperate for a change.”

With donkey voters often numbering their ballot from top to bottom, candidates placed early on the ballot paper generally receive some extra votes thanks to the luck of the top spot.

For Queensland’s House of Representatives ballots, the LNP drew the number one position in nine of the 30 electorates.

Second was the United Australia Party with five top spots, while the ALP drew two and the Greens one.

The ALP drew last most often, falling at the bottom of the ballot in six seats.

Gerardine Hoogland, a new candidate for the UAP, downplayed the significance of being drawn first for the marginal seat of Lilley.

“It’s a privilege to be part of our democratic process, regardless of where you’re placed on the ballot,” Ms Hoogland said.

“At the end of the day it’s always about where people put their vote.”

LNP Candidate for Blair, Sam Biggins, had similar feelings about placing last on his ballot.

“It’s part of our democratic process, I’m happy to be on the ballot in the first place,” Mr Biggins said.

“People in Blair are educated enough to vote for a candidate that will deliver the best results for them.”
