Federal election 2022: Postman quits after mailer dumping furore

Postie caught dumping LNP postal vote applications

A postman caught on camera dumping hundreds of postal vote mailers into a wheelie bin in a marginal Queensland seat no longer works for Australia Post, the company has confirmed.

But the Queensland senator impacted by the mail-related democratic scandal said he still had “substantial concerns” about political mail failing to reach households.

The saga began on April 21 when the postman was caught on camera dumping hundreds of LNP-branded postal vote mailers into a household wheelie bin in the marginal Labor-held seat of Blair just west of Brisbane.

The postman then returned to the scene of the alleged dumping and attempted to bribe the fiery homeowner.

Australia Post, upon hearing of the incident, began an internal investigation.

In a statement, the company confirmed the internal investigation found the postman had been in breach of his employment conditions and no longer worked for the company.

It is understood the postman quit the role.

An AusPost spokesman said the company had worked with the LNP to resolve the matter and all items had since been delivered.

“We take full responsibility and apologise unreservedly,” he said.

But LNP senator Paul Scarr, who had paid for the mailers to be printed, said he still had “substantial concerns” after hearing numerous reports about homeowners who hadn’t received other political mail.

“The latest (complaint) was just (on Wednesday) that they have not received letters which have political information, which I’ve sent through Australia Post,” Senator Scarr said.

He said he had made about a dozen or so reports across a range of suburbs, not all of them in the marginal seat of Blair — although those that AusPost had already looked into found no evidence yet of foul play.
