Scott Morrison has declared it's been a victory for the "quiet Australians" in his victory speech after Bill Shorten has confirmed he will remain in parliament but will not continue as Labor leader after he conceded defeat.
Earlier, Mr Shorten said he wished he could've won for the late Bob Hawke, and he was "disappointed" with the result as he stood on stage with his wife Chloe.
"I wish we could have done it for Bob," he tells Labor Party faithful.
Mr Shorten says the campaign has been "toxic" at times.
"But now that the contest is over, all of us have a responsibility to respect the result, respect the wishes of the Australian people and to bring our nation together. "However that task will be one for the next leader of the Labor Party because while I intend to continue to serve as the member for Maribyrnong, I will not be a candidate in the next Labor leadership ballot."
Meanwhile, the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney is full of surprised Liberal staffers and shocked party members. The room is filled with staff who were facing the prospect of unemployment and are almost speechless at the results.
Chants of “ScoMo” rang out in the Sofitel Wentworth as soon as Mr Shorten finished his concession speech.
Earlier veteran Liberal MP Tony Abbott lost his seat to Zali Steggall in a stunning defeat.
