Barnaby Joyce is known for his trademark Akubras but on Friday was left “hatless” when the hat on his head was auctioned off for more than $6000.
The Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister said he was approached during a charity event in Gladstone in central Queensland and asked to offer his hat, which he bought for about $245 in Alice Springs in February.
“I had the right hat at the right time of the lunch when everyone was tuned up,” Mr Joyce told News Corp.
“So, now I am hatless.”
The Akubra sold for $6100, with all proceeds going to Youngcare, a charity providing housing for young people with disabilities.
Mr Joyce’s hat sold for the highest sum in the auction, earning more than a special limited edition Queensland State of Origin jersey from 2017, which went for $2000.
“Someone is going to wake up with a big hat, a big headache and a small bank balance,” Mr Joyce jokes.
Mr Joyce was earlier pictured wearing the hat at a water park where he spent the morning with partner Vikki Campion and their two young sons, later heading to church for an afternoon Good Friday service.
“I don’t like to do much on Good Friday, the second most important day of the year,” Mr Joyce said.
“After church we will head home, have a meal and go to bed.”
Mr Joyce said he would be out and about on Saturday, meeting community members and attending the final day of the Paradise Lagoons horseshow near Rockhampton.
On Thursday he was in Rockhampton announcing funding for a new motorsports complex, having earlier been in Newcastle, north of Sydney, spruiking a $55 million upgrade of Newcastle Airport’s terminal.
