Driver steps in as man, 40, assaulted in attempted theft on board Darwin bus

A BUS driver has stepped in when a passenger was assaulted by four men on a public bus during an attempted robbery in Rapid Creek overnight

A MAN has been assaulted by four men on a public bus overnight as they tried to rob him.

Duty Superintendent Gavin Kennedy said four men demanded the man’s watch as they assaulted him on the bus in Rapid Creek.

“There was an attempt of stealing and violence on a bus. About 7.10pm last night police received a report of attempted stealing and violence in the area of Trower and Sabine Rds in Rapid Creek.

“Upon police attendance a 40-year-old male advised he was on a route 10 bus, when he was approached by four young males demanding his watch.”

One of the four men allegedly demanded the victim’s watch before punching him to the face multiple times.

Supt Kennedy said the bus driver stepped in to help the man before police and paramedics arrived.

“The bus driver was asked for help. The four males surrounded the victim demanding his watch and wallet while assaulting him,” Supt Kennedy said.

“The bus driver stopped the bus to call for help and the offenders ran off towards the progress Dr, Coconut Grove area empty-handed.”

“The victim sustained mouth injuries, as well as (injuries) to the face and neck,” Supt Kennedy said.

“He was treated by St Johns and conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital.”

All four offenders were wearing dark clothing, with the oldest being an indigenous man about 175 cm high, wearing a black shirt with large white lettering.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time.
