NO PERSONAL circumstances can excuse domestic violence, a Cairns police officer has said at a rally for DV victims held in the city.
Yesterday’s Red Rose Rally, held in Cairns and across the state, shone a light on domestic and family violence homicides in Queensland.
Cairns Senior-Sergeant Peter Banaghan said there was always another choice besides resorting to violence.
“There’s obviously lots of triggers surrounding lifestyle, (such as) drugs, but at the end of the day, the best thing people can do is walk away and cool down,” he said.
Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service chief executive Amanda Lee-Ross said the horrific murder of Brisbane mother Hannah Clarke and her three young children at the hands of their abusive husband and father Rowan Baxter had further raised the need to draw attention to the rate of partner homicides. “People are very angry about what happened, and this is a way to show those people it matters,” she said.
