DARWIN Council has revisited its climate emergency plan with a draft strategy for council to follow over the next decade to be opened for public consultation in the coming weeks.

DARWIN Council has revisited its climate emergency plan with a draft strategy for council to follow over the next decade to be opened for public consultation in the coming weeks.

The plan includes four major goals to suitably enhance resilience and adapt to the impacts of climate change, to achieve net-zero council-controlled emissions by 2030, to support the Darwin community to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, and to embrace emerging opportunities associated with a net-zero transition.

“In Darwin, impacts such as increased severity of heat, storms and flooding present risks to human health, ecosystems, infrastructure and economic prosperity,” the report states.

“The ultimate outcomes, however, will depend on City of Darwin’s response to the climate emergency.”

The council’s climate emergency action plan will be produced through key stakeholder consultation and community presentation in late 2020 and early 2021.
