COOK MP Cynthia Lui is about to open her new office in Cairns following the controversial decision to relocate out of Mareeba – and out of her electorate.
The new electoral office will be at the Commonwealth Centre at the corner of Grafton and Shields streets.
The big shift will begin on Monday, with the doors opening for business on Thursday next week.
Ms Lui defended the decision to move, which has caused friction in Mareeba.
“Currently, the vast number of constituents, peak bodies, industry and community organisations want to meet with me in Cairns,” she said.
“This move will ensure I can spend more time meeting with the people I represent.
“I firmly believe that the new office location will give all constituents better access to my office, so I can continue to deliver for all the communities throughout my electorate.”
Ms Lui said she was proud of her list of key achievements since being elected, including securing $5 million for a CAT scanner at the Mareeba Hospital and $7.5 million for the Burke Developmental Rd between Chillagoe and Almaden.
Her Thursday Island office will attend to all constituent inquiries via email and phone during the shift.
“I will continue to fight hard for Mareeba and the Cook electorate,” she said.
