Coronavirus Cairns: Families prepare for Queensland schools to resume

As a single mum to a child with a behavioural disorder, Cairns woman Danielle Gately has gained new-found gratitude for teachers’ hard work.

Schools are reopening, so here's a guide to the situation in each state and territory

AS a single mum to a child with a behavioural disorder, Cairns woman Danielle Gately has gained new-found gratitude for teachers’ hard work.

As part of the State Government back-to-school road map, kindy, prep, Years 1, 11 and 12 students will be the first to return to school at the beginning of next week.

Ms Gately has spent the past few weeks patiently home schooling her son Jaxson Briscoe, 5, and has faced obstacles getting her boy to focus on his studies.

“He’s very hyperactive and curious and wants to know all about the world,” she said.

“I was actually supposed to take him to the specialist last week. They think he may have ODD and ADHD.

“But I got crook and couldn’t go, which also hasn’t helped with studying – being a single mum I don’t have a lot of help.”

Ms Gately said Parramatta State School had provided plenty of support, with a school study pack from the teachers, and contact via the Dojo app.

“The school does such a good job, they’ve managed to adapt to him and have strategies for dealing with it,” she said.

“With me, I think he’s gone into holiday mode, sleeping in until 11.”

Ms Gately said the remote-learning weeks had reinforced her respect for the teachers.

“If I had techniques and strategies to help like the teachers do, it would be one thing,” she said.

“I will say, being home with him has helped me get a better idea of where he’s at with his studies – he is a quick learner.

“Life gets so hectic these days, being in the same house with him has helped me get more of an appreciation of where he’s at.”

On May 15, the State Government will assess its statewide response to further easing restrictions, with May 25 pencilled in as a proposed date for reopening schools to all students in remaining grades.
