DELIVERY of groceries has become an essential service as the coronavirus pandemic develops, with one Territory family digging into their savings to help those in need.

Tejinder Singh and his wife Gurpreet Kaur have started cooking free meals for up to 230 people who have lost their jobs, can’t leave their home or are otherwise struggling to get a warm meal.

“It’s mainly international students. Their jobs are going and they still have big fees and usually they don’t have savings,” Ms Kaur said.

“We’ve got so many people from single-family incomes and people who have lost their jobs.”

The idea came from the pair’s existing food truck, which they take out about once a month to feed the homeless.

“We thought we had to do something, at least one meal per day,” Ms Kaur said.

“We came to Australia about 15 years ago and we have everything we need now.

“We are just thanking the community now that we have a much better life now than we had in India.”
