CAVENAGH St carpark has officially been transferred from Darwin council to Charles Darwin University and the 391-bay parking area is set to close on Sunday.

A Darwin council spokeswoman said the $14.6 million sale would allow council to reconstruct offices and the university to plan and develop their city-based campus.

“The land transfer has come about following agreement of the project partners to allow CDU to fast-track construction of the Education and Community Precinct, with construction expected to commence in July 2020,” she said.

“As a partner to the Darwin City Deal, City of Darwin supports the development of Charles Darwin University’s Education and Community Precinct.”

The NT News previously reported that CDU refused an offer from the council to operate the carpark on behalf of the university until construction started.

Instead, council yesterday started reaching out to hundreds of regular users of the carpark and permit holders indicating they could look to China Town, West Lane, McMinn St and State Square carparks for alternative all-day parking options.

The spokeswoman said council was confident all motorists could be accommodated in the city.

When asked what the sale meant for the university and its plans, when construction would begin and how the land would be used until then, a CDU spokeswoman said: “CDU and CoD will be issuing a joint statement in due course and we will be in a position to address your questions then.”

The federal and Northern Territory governments will also be included in the statement, given their role in the City Deal.

However, the council yesterday confirmed the carpark would close on Sunday and carpark infrastructure had already been removed.

“Current users of the carpark are being advised of these changes and alternative carparking options communicated,” the council spokeswoman said.
