Cairns retailer calls on fellow businesses to lift their game to attract bigger spend

Cairns’ longest serving retailer said the city’s businesses need to dress for success.

CAIRNS needs to dress for success.

That is the message from the city’s longest-serving retailer.

Victor Mellick has been working on the shop floor of his Abbott St high-end men’s fashion boutique Victor Mellick Men’s Fashion for more than half a century.

He said quality products and store presentation were key to longevity and the focus needed to be on bringing in bigger-spending visitors.

“We need to attract more upmarket, quality businesses,” the 73-year-old said.

“They need to have quality products that are different to what else is around.

“Staff have to lift their appearance and dress better – dress to impress.

“We’ve got to market the city as a much more upmarket destination.

“There are too many budget travellers coming into town who don’t spend money.”
