Cairns ferris wheel: Council to invite attraction back to FNQ

The popular Reef Eye ferris wheel could return to the Cairns Esplanade – and this time for a longer stint – after a successful three-month trial last year.

THE popular Reef Eye ferris wheel could return to the Cairns Esplanade as early as June – and it could be here for a longer stint.

Cairns Regional Council will invite Westshell Wheels to bring its 35m high travelling ferris wheel back for a possible eight-month stay.

The plan follows the success of the ferris wheel’s three-month trial in Cairns from September to November.

The Reef Eye attracted 4000 riders during its first weekend in Cairns and resulted in a total of 65,000 rides by the end of the trial.

The ride is the tallest continuously travelling ferris wheel in Australia, offering 360-degree views through fully enclosed plexiglass-wrapped gondolas.

A council spokesman said the attraction had helped to bring people into the city, with 43 per cent of users identifying as residents in the council area.
