IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Cairns.
With only 34 days until the man in the big red suit comes to town, work began this week to erect the massive Christmas tree on the Esplanade.
The 10 metre tree will feature an array of baubles and 8000 shining LED lights.
It will remain on display throughout the festive season.
“The tree will be installed and decorated in time for the switch on event on Friday, November 30,” a Cairns Regional Council spokeswoman said.
A range of festive fun will run on the Esplanade from 5.30pm — 8pm on the day.
Mayor Bob Manning and winners of this year’s Council’s Christmas eCard Design Competition will have the honour of turning on the tree’s lights just after 7pm on the night.
This will be preceded by the Christmas Lantern Parade that will march from Fogarty Park to the Esplanade Plaza.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Cairns residents planning on putting up lights and displays this year also have until November 30 to join one of the city’s most popular lists of Christmas displays.
Homes ranging from Gordonvale through to Clifton Beach can register.
Visit the Christmas Lights Around Cairns Facebook page for more information or to register with organiser Andrea Attree.
The list of participating properties will be released on December 1.
