Bodycam footage has captured a female police officer’s horrifying ordeal as she was overpowered and assaulted while attempting to arrest a man on the Gold Coast last year.
The incident occurred on December 13 in Parkwood, after police were called to Greenacre Drive just after 5.30am by a member of the public concerned about a damaged black Lexus with two men asleep inside.
Noah Spells, 40, can be seen on bodycam footage obtained by 7News inside the car, grimacing after being ordered to exit the vehicle.
He suddenly lunges at the Queensland Police officer, who tasers him and attempts to handcuff him.
But Spells manages to wrestle the officer to the ground before running from the scene.
Bodycam footage shows her attempting to fight him off as her handcuffs lie on the ground.
Both Spells and the driver of the vehicle, who had previously fled and was chased by the another police officer, were apprehended a short time later.
Police said a search of the vehicle located a firearm, ammunition and items used in property offences.
The officer was taken to hospital with a head injury and abrasions.
Spells was sentenced at Southport court on Tuesday and jailed for two years, 7News reported.
He will be eligible for parole next April.
The incident was also filmed by a bystander and went viral after being uploaded to Reddit last year.
Speaking to reporters at the time, Gold Coast Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said that it “just highlights the danger our police officers face when they turn out to a routine job”.
Commenting on the video, Mr Knowles said the officer “did a fantastic job, but it was certainly a struggle there”.
“She’s not the biggest of police officers but she put up a very good fight in an attempt to restrain this offender,” he said.
“He was drug-affected so obviously that affected his strength and his attitude at the time, but she did a fantastic job. Certainly that would be confronting and it’s something that we’ll work through with our support network to make sure she’s OK.”
Asked whether it was “normal protocol” for the officer to have approached the driver on her own, Mr Knowles said Queensland Police officers were “well equipped and very well trained”.
“This is what they do every day of the week,” he said.
“She did a fantastic job, she deployed a taser at the time, she had the offender under control, it’s just unfortunately that the strength overcame her.”
