Adani to increase coal capacity at Abbot Point but no change to overall export

ADANI has been granted approval to increase the export capacity of its coal terminal at Abbot Point, which will delay the need to construct a second terminal.

Protest group calls for government to hold Adani to account

ADANI has been granted approval to increase the export capacity of its coal terminal at Abbot Point, which will delay the need to construct a second terminal.

Queensland’s co-ordinator general has approved an application by Adani Abbot Point Terminal (AAPT) to build a new conveyor and transfer tower at its existing “T1” terminal, which would allow for an additional 10 million tonnes of coal to be transferred per year.

This would bring the total capacity of T1 to 60 million tonnes annually, but there is no change to overall approved capacity through the Abbot Point Precinct.

Adani has approval to export 90 million tonnes of coal through the port but by increasing capacity at T1 the company will not have to build its new “T0” terminal as quickly.

T1 is currently operating at about 28 million tonnes a year.

An AAPT spokeswoman confirmed the application had been lodged.

“AAPT recently submitted a Material Change of Use application as part of feasibility studies to enhance the terminal’s capacity,” she said.

“This is part of normal business practice in managing capacity requests from all existing and prospective users of the terminal facilities.”

The application approval has been slammed by conservationists who want Adani’s proposed Carmichael mine stopped.

Australian Conservation Foundation Stop Adani campaigner Christian Slattery said the Government should stop supporting the coal industry.

“Just this week the international scientific community warned that unless we swiftly stop burning coal we will lose all coral reefs, including the Great Barrier Reef,” he said.

“This week’s report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows there is no scientific case for digging new coal mines and expanding coal ports.”
