The travel industry’s carbon footprint has become a key issue at global climate talks but one Australian company is taking action to show its commitment to reducing its emissions.

13cabs – Australia’s largest taxi network – is calling on Governments and councils to increase the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Australian cities to support the growing adoption of sustainable transport.

As part of its push for a greener transport future, and to show its commitment to a low-emission future, 13cabs is offering free rides in electric taxis in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane for World Sustainable Transport Day.

Passengers who hail a 13cabs electric taxi with the green logo in the CBD in those cities on Tuesday, November 26, will travel for free between 8am and 6pm.

Trips will be capped top the value of $60.

13cabs chief operating officer Olivia Barry said: “We are leading the charge in Australia’s transition to a low-emission transport network, but a vital part of this transition is the availability of EV charging infrastructure.

“To truly reduce transport emissions, we need widespread, accessible charging stations that support our drivers switching to electric vehicles.”

With global emissions hitting a record high in 2023, transport and the impact of tourism and travel on the environment have been included in the United Nations climate talks this year.

And while the biggest emitters face the challenge of implementing climate change innovation to create a greener transport future, smaller players like 13cabs are making changes.

The UN’s Decade of Sustainable Transport, starting in 2026, will aim to further raise awareness of transport’s crucial role in developing sustainable solutions, resources and partnerships to advance greener transport globally.
