POLICE are hunting a man and woman who dumped a stolen black Mercedes after a wild police chase across Melbourne’s southeast and northeast this morning.

The black Mercedes station wagon, reportedly with rear damage and flat tyres being driven on its rims, led officers on a lengthy pursuit that started on Bell Street in Heidelberg about 10am.

Police followed the car through Heidelberg, Malvern and Moorabbin, before it was abandoned in the car park of Monash University in Caulfield.

Caller Sally, from Malvern East, told 3AW Mornings she saw a vehicle speeding along Bourke Road towards Dandenong Road.

Another caller, Brandon, said he was left terrified after the car nearly ran him down.

“(The car) zipped across all four lanes and almost collected myself and a few other vehicles,” he said.

“The tyres and been punctured and the car was easily going 80 or 90 kilometres per hour.”

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Brandon said he was driving on Dandenong Rd about 11.10am when the Mercedes cut across all the lanes in front of him.

“The break assistance on my car had to break for me as I didn’t have a fast enough reaction time, it was that close,” he said.

“At this point I did not see any police at all, anywhere. I pulled over to call 000 and report the incident, not knowing what was happening.”

A few minutes later he saw the Mercedes again, near Burke St at high speeds followed by an unmarked police car about 200m behind, and about six more behind it, he said.

“The Mercedes has deflated tires, it was driving on its rims and had damage to the passenger side of the car. I unfortunately did not see the driver due to the Merc having tinting and everything happening so quick.”

Witnesses said there was a police helicopter monitoring the chase.

Monash University Student Cillian Jansen told the Herald Sun it’s a dramatic scene at the Caulfield campus.

“There are 10-plus police vehicles including plain cars and highway patrol around the campus, and the officers are asking people if they have seen a short chubby lady with purple streaks in her hair,” he said.

Police confirmed they are hunting a man and a woman in the area surrounding the university.
